 This is only a partial list, be sure to check back often as we update community service projects and workshops.

Saturday, October 10th will be a unique learning experience for everyone at Power Shift. 

In the morning, Summit participants will choose from a variety of Community Service Projects to get hands on with in the Lansing area.  Scroll down the page for a list of these projects, more will be announced soon.

Following the Community Service Projects, Summit participants will head back into the Lansing Center for an afternoon of classroom workshops and trainings.  There are currently five categories to choose from and participants may select to take all of the classes offered in the category or mix and match their class selection among the different categories.  Each class will last about an hour, will be taught by an expert in the field, and will educate even the most seasoned Power Shifter.  Participants will be able to attend four classes Saturday afternoon. Scroll about halfway down the page for more info on these classes.

GREENATION YOUTH RECYCLING PROGRAM

Facilitator: Derrell Slaughter

GreenNation, an organization that focuses on social equity through the green movement while targeting urban centers throughout Michigan, will be kick-starting their Youth Recycling Program on Saturday.  This workshop will get participants out into local communities within Lansing to assist in recycling old, out-dated electronics as well as educating individuals on the importance of recycling within your community. 

  • Where can old electronics and other harmful unused equipment be properly discarded?
  • Focus on sustainable community development
  • Engagement and Education of residents on green concepts and how-to's for implementation
  • Immediate impact program with emphasis on lasting results
  • Urban redevelopment and collaboration with low-income residents

URBAN GARDENING AND NATIVE OUTDOOR HORTICULTURE

Join local horticulturists in redeveloping a plot of land within the city of Lansing.  Greening of urban open land in the form of gardens can provide needed food for communities, habitats for native plants and animals and restoration of unhealthy soil for productive growth. Learn the skills and knowledge required to plan, restore and sustain a living garden within urban areas.   A very hand on workshop, so come prepared to get dirty.

  • Education on Native plant and animal species and characteristic that assist in a healthy eco-system
  • Complete dismantling of current space and preparation for new growth
  • Soil testing and implementation of healthy nutrients
  • Installation of new plants
  • Creation of a cold room greenhouse for winter growing
  • Methods of harvesting, maintenance and future installations
  • What is a healthy plant? Symptoms of healthy and unhealthy plants and solutions
  • Located across the street from the Lansing Center, on the grounds of an arts/music cooperative called "Basement 414."

 

BICYCLE CO-OP CREATION

Unite with an artistic/music cooperative, "Basement 414," in converting an empty garage space into a much needed bicycle cooperative in Downtown Lansing.  Sustainable Transportation is vital to any community and Lansing is no exception.  Lansing is working hard to incorporate bike lanes and bicycle friendly streets and having a cooperative within the city would greatly assist in that movement. 

  • Bicycle education on safety, maintenance and repairs
  • Creation of program specifics (i.e. locks? availability of lockers/building?)
  • Transformation of empty space into co-op office
  • Redesign of outdoor entry way and building of ramps for accessibility
  • Make all bikes functional, safe and ride-ready
  • Creation of sustainable community infrastructure

 

ALLEN NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER GREENHOUSE

Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC) serves as a hub for neighborhood education and capacity building. We offer activities that promote the health, safety, and stability of families and neighborhoods on the Eastside of Lansing.

We provide:

  • Support for organized neighborhood groups: technical assistance, meeting space, use of copy machine and fax.
  • A neighborhood-based, comprehensive information and referral service, linking residents to housing, health, and human service providers throughout the area.
  • A local ‘learning space’ for residents of all ages, featuring a variety of classes and programs.

 

URBAN OPTIONS: ENERGY DEMONSTRATION HOUSE

Urban Options (urbanoptions.org) provide practical energy efficiency and environmental sustainability solutions for residents and businesses in Michigan. Urban Options continues to be a leader in sustainable living by providing information, educational programs, demonstrations, and energy efficiency programs and services that encourage practical actions people can take to improve the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of their homes, businesses and communities

 ZYNOC ENERGY SOLUTIONS

Facilitator: Brad Kallio

Zynoc(zynoc.com) is a powerhouse when it comes to practical, self-produced solutions to energy problems.  Collaborating with organizations across the state of Michigan, Zynoc is diligently working towards a green, sustainable energy future with the motto: "Where the Imagination is the Limit."  Popularized by the Zyke-Bike, a bike-car hybrid that was made completely out of recycled materials and operates off solar panels on the roof that creates energy that is stored in batteries:  A must see!!

Community Retro-Fits

Facilitator: Rock Hudson

NorthTown Community Association is located in the North part of Lansing and is committed to helping the community and its residents so that a quality standard of life is maintained. They have performed a variety of tasks to improve the local neighborhoods and continue to pursue projects that can have positive, lasting impacts.  This is a great opportunity to learn about urban development and get hands on experience in assisting those who need it the most

  • Painting of exterior home
  • General Repairs of roof, house framework and other areas
  • Yard cleaning and maintenance
  • Working with low-income home owners and neighborhood residents
  • Free lunch!

 

 ADVOCACY AND FIELD COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

Facilitator: Josh Hyman


An immersive field practice in community organizing.

Planning a campaign, the principles of organizing, and what the
hands-on tactics of organizing are (canvassing, clipboarding,
phonebanking, etc.)

Talk about messaging and how it applies to the tactics discussed
(e.g., if an "ask" needs to be Local and Urgent, what does that mean for
you when you're out clipboarding?  What could you say to get someone to
stop?)

Going out in the community and using our newly honed grassroots schedule to make change!
 

FENNER NATURE CENTER

The Fenner Nature Center exists to facilitate the preservation a natural environment within an urban setting for the health and well-being of all living things and to promote a appreciation of the natural world.

The 2008 elections proved that young people's voices are a force to be reckoned with.  The strength of the youth vote helped to push many progressive candidates over the top and set forth progressive policies that represent us.  Those that choose to attend this track will attend the following workshops:

How do we clearly articulate our issue in terms everyone can understand?

  • Once we have clearly developed our issue, how do we advertise or market our issue to a larger audience?
  • How do we identify groups that we can build a coalition with?  How do we build said coalition?
  • How do we push our issue through bureaucracies like universities and city governments (make our voices heard to the decision makers)?
  • Other ways to take action on our issue

Media and Communications

Presenter: Mary Nichol: GreenPeace State Director

We'll discuss how to generate media for a grassroots campaigns and how to craft an effective message.  In particular, we'll share tips on how to write press releases, advisories, and letters to the editor

By learning simple, powerful ways to de-stress, to get centered, and to find calm and clarity in the midst of everyday chaos, we can better sustain our activism and prevent early burnout.
